Could Honda really be looking at buying Harley?
Barely two weeks ago, we had reported rumours of a merger between Ducati and Harley-Davidson. Now, according to stories on Reuters and Forbes, Honda want to buy the American motorcycle manufacturer! In fact, this rumour even resulted in share prices of H-D going up by more than six percent on the New York Stock Exchange two days ago.
Reports say that a Honda-Harley union could control as much as 65% percent of the American motorcycle market, with the next competitor, Yamaha, lagging far behind at only 16%. However, as analyst Edward Aaron says, ‘I'd be surprised if there was a Honda and Harley-Davidson combination, basically for regulatory and cultural reasons. Harley is an iconic American brand. I don't think it would be a great fit if they were under the ownership of a larger Japanese corporation.’
Harley spokesperson, Bob Klein says ‘We don't typically comment on market speculation,’ while Honda spokeswoman Makiko Yoshida said ‘There's absolutely no truth to it.’ Honda, Ducati and Harley-Davidson. Three bike manufacturers from three different countries, building bikes that offer completely different riding experiences. Can they merge? Will they merge? For now, you’ll have to come to your own conclusions…
