2009 Ducati 1198 and 1198S confirmed!

The 2009 Ducati 1198 will use a less expensive version of the 1098R's engine...

According to a report on Hell for Leather, Ducati are ready with the 1198 for 2009. The bike is expected to use the 1098R’s engine (which already displaces 1198cc), but perhaps with some of its components replaced with less expensive, less exotic bits.

The Ducati 1198’s engine is also likely to be in a lower state of tune compared with the 1098R’s engine and is expected to produce about 170 horsepower – 10bhp down on the 1098R. The base model 1198 will cost around US$16,500 while the 1198S – with higher-spec suspension and electronic traction control – may be closer to US$21,000.

The 2009 Ducati 1198 will be lighter than the current 1098 and may get minor styling updates as well. Apart from this, Ducati are also expected to release a Monster 1100S for 2009, which will get high-spec Öhlins suspension, and a brand-new super-naked which will be fitted with the current 1098 engine.

More details on these and other 2009 Ducatis soon…

Pics of this particular bike have been popping up all over the Web. Is this the Ducati Monster 1100 or just a very nicely customized 696? Hmmm.....

not even two years in prod ! the 1098 has to go ?? huh...i feel bad fr the present crop of 1098 owners ! wat the hell man ! u make a bike ! then after 2 years think it shud displace moreeee and scrap the old one off ? why don t u give the complete product in the beginning itself ?.. this now makes the 1098r owners less exclusive of wat they own !

well, not really. the 1098 is not being 'scrapped' at all. the 1198 will merely be an evolution of the 1098. same chassis, same suspension, same bodywork and so on. and the 1098r will still be top dog - it will be more powerful than the base 1198, more expensive and more exclusive.

as for me, i'd settle for a 1098, 1198 or even a 999r. love ducatis, but haven't yet been able to save the dough to buy one. sob...

Don't worry, the BMW S1000RR and Aprilia RSV4 are coming and they will both kick ass. Ducati ass. Ducati has had things its way for far too long. I'm waiting for the 2009 SBK season to begin and I hope Ducati get their ass kicked back all the way to Bologna. YAY!

The only one that does any ass kicken IS Ducati! Ducati is #1. Always has been and always will be. Everything else is just second best. Long live Ducati, king of motorcycles.

WOW! I'm just glad that I passed on a 1098S! Even if I could get one for a couple grand less than the new 1198S, the 08 would instantly be worth at least $5K less with everyone jumping on the new 1198 bandwagon. Ask 2001 Corvette Z06 owners (385hp) what happened to the value of their cars when the 2002 model came out with 405 hp. The cars had the exact same body style and the 01s had to be given away compared to the price the 02s were holding. Ducati did not do much here to contribute to the re-sale value of their present customer's 07 and 08 1098s! Oh well, all in the name of improvement!

As to the comment about the BMW vs. Ducati, I have a lightly modified 07 K1200S that absolutely FLIES. Great bike for longer rides over the weekend, and even mild twisties with the ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) switched to Sport mode. However, ask me what I'm riding if it's less than 100 miles. Answer: Ducati. Nothing even comes close to the sound, look, and feel of a 1098S with Termis on it. Not to mention the looks you get when you pull up on one!

the white monster in the picture above has a liquid cooled twin cam engine i have no idea what it is but it would seem there is a gap in the line up between the s2r1100 and the upcoming streetfighter and ducati has a twin cam motor that they only use in one model s4r with 849 cc's

All I can say is that I am so glad I waited a year to buy the 1198!!! I would have been very upset to open my wallet for a 1098s and have this new Bologna bike come out on it's heels. To all of you who advocate other manufacturers... ride a Ducati. Oh, and look at the WSB and MotoGP points too! Ciao tutti, forza Ducati. By: George Villar
