Honda have announced the development of a new 670cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin for midsize motorcycles. The new engine has been developed for applications that require strong torque delivery at low to medium speeds and a high degree of fuel efficiency. Along with the new engine, Honda have also announced the development of their second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) for motorcycles.

According to Honda, their new 670cc engine delivers up to 27km/l in terms of fuel efficiency and can either be combined with a conventional six-speed gearbox or the company’s new, compact and lightweight DCT, which is smoother and more efficient than the earlier dual clutch transmission that was fitted on some Honda motorcycles like the VFR1200F.

Honda have released the first offical pics of the 2012 CBR1000RR Fireblade, which also happens to be the 20th Anniversary Fireblade, what with Honda having launched the very first CBR900RR FireBlade back in 1991. The 2012 Fireblade was revealed simultaneously at the Le Mans 24 hours round of the Endurance World Championship in France, and the eleventh round of the 2011 World Superbike Championship in Imola, Italy.

‘I've got a real soft spot for the Fireblade. I've ridden it in many different racing events over the years and had a lot of success with it. In fact, some of the most memorable moments of my career have been on the Fireblade,’ said Honda rider and IoM TT legend, John McGuinness, while unveiling the new bike at Le Mans. ‘It’s pretty exciting and I'm honoured that I was chosen to do it,’ he added.

2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale announced

Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for your patience. Mr Panigale is having a BMW S1000RR and an Aprilia RSV4 Factory for breakfast. He will be with us shortly

Ducati have announced a name for their 2012 superbike, the machine that will replace the current 1198. The new bike will be called the Ducati 1199 Panigale, which will be officially unveiled during the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, in November this year.

The Ducati 1199 Panigale (pronounced ‘eleven-ninety-nine Pan-ee-gah-lee’) will first see racing action in the 2012 FIM Superstock Championship and will make its debut in World Superbikes in 2013. We fully expect the 1199 to be a fearsome machine – its 1199cc L-twin is likely to be a fire-breathing, 190-horsepower monster and the bike will feature the latest iteration of Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and racing-oriented ABS etc.

Can’t wait for Valentino Rossi to unveil the 1199 Panigale at EICMA in November. Should be an awesome moment for Ducati.

Ford unveils E-Bike Concept

An electric bicycle from Ford. Maybe they're getting tired of selling the Mustang...

Ford has unveiled the E-Bike Concept, a bicycle fitted with the best bike components available anywhere, and technology from F1. Shown at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, the Ford E-Bike Concept can travel up to 85km on a fully charged battery.

Developed by Ford Design, in partnership with German brand cyber-Wear (the company behind Ford's Lifestyle Collection products), the Ford E-Bike Concept has been created to appeal to both men and women. ‘The E-Bike market is growing very, very rapidly, with some 30 million units sold globally last year. We see E-Bikes as an important element of urban electric mobility. More and more people are using E‑Bikes for short distance commuting and they are becoming comfortable with the concept of electric mobility,’ says Axel Wilke, Director - Vehicle Personalisation, Ford Customer Service Division, Europe.

2012 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade to get fly-by-wire technology

Among other things, the 2012 Honda Fireblade will also fly-by-wire technology...

The 2012 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade, spy shots of which appeared last month, may not look dramatically different from the current model, but it almost certainly will perform better. In addition to improvements made to the bike’s chassis and suspension, Honda seem to be moving things ahead in the engine department in a big way. The 2012 Fireblade will get an all-new fly-by-wire throttle management system, which is likely to work in tandem with Honda’s next-generation C-ABS and some kind of traction control system.

Castrol Honda riders – Jonathan Rea, Ruben Xaus and Makoto Tamada – are scheduled to start testing the new fly-by-wire system very soon, in Misano. The team has also confirmed that this new technology will be homologated for street use with the introduction of the 2012 CBR1000RR.

A lot was happening back in 1980. Ronald Reagan was running a Presidential campaign in the US, NASA’s Voyager I space probe was getting close to Saturn, Pink Floyd, Olivia Newton-John, Michael Jackson, Lipps Inc., Elton John, Diana Ross, Billy Joel and Queen were making music, John Lennon was shot dead and Yoda and pals took on Darth Vader as The Empire Struck Back.

The 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1, now with six-mode traction control

It seems Yamaha have decided they aren’t ready to take on the likes of the BMW S1000RR, Aprilia RSV4 Factory and Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja just yet. The company has announced the 2012 R1 and while the new bike does get traction control and ‘50th Anniversary colours,’ little else seems to have changed.

According to Yamaha, the 2012 YZF-R1 has been given a six-mode traction control system that has been developed in MotoGP. ‘The new TCS reinforces the rider’s trust in the bike’s abilities, enabling you to unleash its full potential at the flick of a switch,’ says a press release from Yamaha. ‘Equipped with a short-wheelbase Deltabox chassis, crossplane-crankshaft engine and high-tech electronic control systems, the breathtaking R1 is the embodiment of everything that we have learnt in MotoGP and WSB,’ it adds.
