BMW have taken the wraps off their new naked streetfighter, the S1000RR-based S1000R, which is now on display at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. In what’s a bit of a disappointment, the Bavarians have detuned the S1000RR’s magnificent 200bhp inline-four down to 160 horsepower for the S1000R, though with the latter’s 207 kilo kerb weight, performance should still be phenomenal.
Like the BMW S1000RR, the S1000R also gets Race ABS and automatic stability control (ASC). Two riding modes are standard, while Riding mode Pro (with two additional ride modes), dynamic damping control (DDC) and dynamic traction control (DTC) are on the list of available options. While the S1000R is overall down on power compared to the S1000RR, BMW claim that up to 7,500rpm, the S1000R’s engine develops 10Nm more than its fully faired cousin. “This provides punchy low-end response that is ideal on twisty single-carriageway roads. Among other things, this was achieved by using redesigned cylinder head ducts, modified cam profiles and appropriately modified engine management. The new BMS-X engine management system also supports an E-Gas ‘throttle-by-wire’ system,” they claim.
Like the RR, the new S1000R also uses an aluminium alloy perimeter frame, in which the engine forms part of the load-bearing structure. With adjustable fork and shock, radial-mount 4-piston brake callipers at the front, multi-function instrument cluster with analog rev-counter and lap timer, and programmable quick-shifter, the 2014 BMW S1000R is ready to play as hard as you want.
