Honda have taken the wraps off the 2014 CBR600F and its naked brother, the CB650F, with both bikes now on display at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. The new CBR650F is designed to be an all-around competent sportsbike but one that’s nowhere near as extreme as, say, a CBR600RR.

The 2014 CBR650F is fitted with a 649cc DOHC, 16-valve inline-four that produces 86bhp and 63Nm of torque. Rather than peak power delivery at high revs, the CBR650F’s engine has been designed to deliver high levels of torque below 4,000rpm, since Honda engineers chose to focus on strong acceleration from a standing start, low- to mid-range torque delivery and mid-gear roll-on throttle response. The bike’s twin-spar chassis, made of steel, with an aluminium swingarm, was also designed to offer the best of both worlds – very good riding dynamics, combined with relatively lower costs, while keeping the kerb weight down to a somewhat reasonable 211kg. ABS has been kept standard fitment in the interests of safety. And with its mileage figure of around 21km/l, the bike has a useful range of more than 350km from a single tank of fuel.
Suspension on the 2014 Honda CBR650F consists of a non-adjustable 41mm telescopic fork and preload-adjustable monoshock. The bike rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, shod with 120/70 (front) and 180/55 (rear) tyres. LED taillamps and front position lights, and a digital instrument panel add to the bike’s style factor. Colours available include white, black, silver and a special red-white-blue tricolor paint scheme.
The range of factory accessories available for the new CBR650F includes a tall windscreen, top box, heated grips, paddock stand, seat bag, rear carrier, and various faux carbon bits – hugger, seat cowl, front mudguard and crankcase protectors etc.
For those who like their bike naked, the CBR650F’s fairing-less cousin, the CB650F is also there in Honda’s 2014 line-up. Apart from the lack of a fairing and minor differences in terms of styling, the two CBs are pretty much identical. Prices, TBA.
