2014 KTM RC390 unveiled

The RC390 Cup racebike is the machine on which the RC390 streetbike - a fully faired entry-level sportsbike - will be based. Younger riders will love it!

Austrian bike manufacturer, KTM (which is now 40% owned by Indian motorcycle manufacturer, Bajaj Auto) recently unveiled the new RC390 Cup racebike, which will be raced in the upcoming ADAC Junior Cup series. KTM have also confirmed that the 2014 RC390 streetbike – a fully faired entry-level sportsbike that will take on the likes of the Kawasaki Ninja 300R, Honda CBR250R and Yamaha YZF250R next year – will be based on the Cup racer.

KTM, which has already been very successful in Moto3, wants to add more entry-level sportsbikes to its line-up and the RC390 is an important step in that direction. “We developed a pure GP racing machine for the Moto3 World Championship. In contrast, the RC 390 Cup is based on a series model project. Both of these two projects were given the highest priority because the development of lower displacement, high quality street bikes are among our core activities. The new KTM RC 390, which will be available for sale in 2014 will meet a big demand for affordable, quality sport bikes for the lower displacement class,” says KTM CEO Stefan Pierer.

Apart from the addition of street-spec bits - headlamp, turn-indicators, taillamp and a dual-seat unit - we expect the RC390 streetbike to look exactly like the Cup racebike you see here, which is just brilliant. In fact, we wonder how the Japanese plan to take on this new KTM. At one time in the distant past, the Japs did know how to make the best 400cc sportsbikes in the world (see here, here and here), but do they still remember? Would they still be willing to go all out and produce something that can take on the Austrian contender in the entry-level sportsbike segment?

The 2014 Aprilia Tuono V4R ABS, with its 170bhp V4 and advanced APRC electronics package, is a truly formidable streetfighter. This one is not to be messed with

Aprilia have updated the V4R streetfighter for 2014 – power from the V4 engine has been increased to 170bhp, the APRC electronics package has been fine-tuned for further finesse and all-out performance and the bike now gets adjustable 3-level (track, sport and rain) anti-lock brakes (ABS), which can also be switched off completely by the rider.

According to Aprilia, the Tuono V4R is a full-on superbike, albeit one with high handlebars and ergonomics that make it easy for the bike to be used on the street in everyday road and traffic conditions. For 2014, the V4R gets a better padded seat for improved longer distance comfort, a bigger, 18.5-litre fuel tank for increased range and new, fully adjustable 43mm USD forks from Sachs, which have separate adjustments for compression and rebound damping.

The 2014 Tuono V4R also gets an updated APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) electronics package, which is fully integrated with the bike’s ABS, ride-by-wire throttle and multi-map ECU for the V4 engine. The APRC package includes a wheelie control system and has a self-calibrating function that automatically compensates for tyre circumference, allowing the rider to choose from a variety of tyres available for the Tuono. The bike’s 8-level traction control system has also been further refined and can be adjusted on the fly.

Braking performance on the 2014 Tuono, which weighs 185 kilos dry, has been improved, with the bike getting radial-mount Brembo monobloc callipers and twin 320mm steel brake discs at the front. At the same time, the bike’s 65-degree 1,000cc V4 has been pumped up a bit and now produces 170 horsepower and 11,500rpm and 111.5Nm of torque at 9,500 revs. Along with revised gear ratios (shorter ratios for the first three gears), the hike in power output results in significantly improved acceleration. So, is the new Aprilia Tuono V4R ABS the best supernaked streetfighter in the world? We certainly wouldn’t bet against that!

13th BMW Motorrad Days sees 40,000 visitors


In addition to all of the above, the 2013 BMW Motorrad Days also had burgers and giant pitchers of cold beer. What more can you ask for...?

The 13th BMW Motorrad Days, held in Hausberg, in Garmisch, Germany, from July 5th to 7th, was quite a success, with more than 40,000 people from all over the world showing up at the event to celebrate BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary. No new production bikes were unveiled though BMW’s new book, ‘90 Years of BMW Motorrad,’ was presented in public for the first time. The BMW Concept Ninety, which takes its design cues from the legendary R90S, was also present at the event and was ridden by Bonneville salt flats legend, Valerie Thompson. Apart from all of this was, of course, the bike stunts, beer, rock music, more beer, burgers and… er…, well, even more beer. Enjoy the high-res pics of all the action.

2013 Brutale Corsa 1090 unveiled


The 2013 MV Agusta Brutale Corsa 1090, a suitably exotic Italian streetfighter for those with suitably exotic Italian girlfriends. Oh yes, this one should be hot!

“Brutale Corsa pushes back the boundaries even further to venture into previously unexplored territory. With 158bhp of power and 100Nm of torque, the Brutale Corsa is instantly recognizable at first sight for the outstanding quality of its components, extreme attention to detail and spectacular bespoke livery,” says a press release from MV Agusta. And indeed, the Brutale 1090, already a formidable streetfighter in stock form, does get even more desirable in its Corsa guise, with a nice sprinkling of exotica – ultra-light forged alloy wheels, fully adjustable Öhlins fork, machined-from-billet steering head, foot pegs and brake and clutch fluid reservoir caps, hand-stitched rider and passenger seats, and carbonfibre mudguards.

2013 Piaggio Ape Calessino 200 is still cool at 55


The Ape Calessino, probably one of the coolest things on three wheels...

The first Piaggio Ape three-wheeler was launched back in 1948 and today, with more than two million units sold over the last 55 years, the Ape is still going strong. The newest version – the 2013 Ape Calessino 200 – is, according to Piaggio, “A magnificent heir to a unique tradition unequalled by anything else in the world and a modern, youthful and agile reinterpretation of the iconic design of the 1960s, which perfectly embodies the sunshine and joie de vivre typical of the Mediterranean lifestyle.” Ahem. All right, even if that’s a bit much, we have to say the little three-wheeler looks damn cool and is stylish in its own unique way.

Powered by a 200cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine that produces a mighty 10 horsepower, the new Ape has a 4-speed (plus reverse) gearbox, is nimble enough to deal with traffic-packed narrow streets and has a top speed of 55km/h. It also boasts a folding soft-top (made of waterproof, washable beige-coloured canvas) which the ladies might appreciate, and its four doors, mounted on frames in polished stainless steel tubing with canvas ‘covers,’ offer easy accessibility to the cabin, which can accommodate a driver and two passengers.

The 2013 Ape Calessino 200 is available in three colours – red, white and blue – and is priced at 4,930 euros plus VAT.

2014 Yamaha XV950R unveiled


The 2014 Yamaha XV950 and XV950R, for those who've always wanted a retro-styled custom bobber with LED rear lights and an LCD speedometer...

Yamaha have unveiled their new “custom bobber” duo, the 2014 XV950R and XV950, both of which get styling inspired by Yamaha bikes of the 1980s and a 942cc air-cooled fuel-injected 8-valve V-twin that produces 80Nm of torque at 3,000rpm. “Compact and stylish, with a low seat height, the XV950 models deliver a refined and agile ride. Yamaha’s unique flat line style and use of exposed metal components accentuates the bike’s pure simplicity while the V-twin motor provides both spirited performance and unquestioned reliability,” claims a press release from Yamaha. “Stripped back and stylish, the XV950 model provides a perfect entry into the world of customisation while the XV950R injects a further element of sporting ability with twin ‘piggy back’ shock absorbers, a buckskin-look seat cover and the use of a painted stripe along the fuel tank,” it adds.

While the Yamaha XV950 and XV950R certainly look a few decades old, they do get a few modern bits – LED rear lamp, anti-lock brakes, ceramic composite plating inside the cylinder, forged aluminium pistons, new 3D maps for the ignition timing and fuel-injection, LCD instrument panel and a 2-into-1 exhaust system that fully noise and emissions norms compliant. With its double-cradle steel frame, 41mm forks, adjustable twin rear shocks, 298mm brake discs (both front and rear), 19-inch (front) and 16-inch (rear) wheels, and a newly designed belt-drive system that uses a carbonfibre core for improved rigidity, the XV950 is an interesting mix of the old and the new. Also, a range of accessories being offered by Yamaha – Akrapovic slip-on exhaust, mini-fairing, stiletto seat, stainless steel brake lines, performance air cleaner cover, wire-spoke wheels, and springer seat and fork cover etc – will probably ensure that XV950 buyers will be able to customize their machines the way they want.

Colours available for the 2014 Yamaha XV950 and XV950R include matt grey, camo green, white and black. In the UK, suggested retail price for the XV950R is £7499 and for the XV950 is £7199.

Ducati 1199 Panigale wins 2013 Red Dot ‘best-of-the-best’ Design Award




The Red Dot Design Awards recognise excellence in product design, and the Ducati 1199 Panigale is the rightful winner this year. Yes indeed, the bike's gorgeous...!

Of the 4,662 products assessed for the 2013 ‘best-of-the-best’ Red Dot Design Awards this year, it’s the Ducati 1199 Panigale that’s come out on top, winning the award today in the official ceremony held at the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany. Decided by a jury of 37 experts, the award recognizes excellence in the product design category. The Panigale will be exhibited for four weeks at the Red Dot design museum in Germany, at an exhibition in Taiwan and, for one year, at the Red Dot design museum in Singapore.

“The red dot ‘best of the best’ award acknowledges all the hard work put in by everyone at Ducati R&D for over three years. Moreover, joining the ranks of the award’s top winners has made this product – and Ducati – part of product design history. Every single component has been designed to be performance-oriented and function-specific. Together, all these components form a harmonious, light, visually stunning product. Which is just how a Ducati should be,” said Andrea Ferraresi, Ducati Design Centre Director, during the prize-giving ceremony in Germany, today.

“The winners of the Red Dot product design award 2013 are the protagonists of fast developments within the very culture of industrial design. The last few days have seen us engaged in the extremely difficult task of selecting the best, most deserving designs. Indeed, it is sometimes just a single detail that makes the difference when it comes to showing off a product’s special qualities. All these creations have been assessed and examined by the expert and critical eyes of an international Red Dot jury,” added Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, Red Dot Founder and CEO.

Arch KRGT-1: Keanu Reeves builds his first motorcycle


Keanu Reeves talks about the Arch KRGT-1...

Hollywood movie star, Keanu Reeves is also a motorcyclist. He does own a vintage Volvo and some brand-new Porsche but otherwise mostly gets around on a bike. He started with a Kawasaki 600 enduro and has, since then, owned a Suzuki GS1100E, Suzuki GSX-R750, a 1974 BMW 750, Kawasaki KZ900, a 1984 Harley-Davidson Shovelhead, and a Moto Guzzi among others. And now, the actor has teamed up with Gard Hollinger, a self-taught designer, engineer and fabricator, to set up the Arch Motorcycle Company. The duo are, in fact, ready with their very first motorcycle – the Arch KRGT-1 – and it's not too bad, really.
